Munchin’ at Uchi

A few weeks ago, we celebrated a few birthdays at one of Houston’s top rated restaurants, Uchi. Uchi? The name is somewhat different and can I add the experience we had was like no other! First of all, by the time it opens for dinner/happy hour, there’s a line out the door. That’s a good sign, right?! I originally thought this was going to be the typical sushi restaurant, very modern, and so-so. Nope, not at all. One by one, each group is escorted by a host/hostess to their table and you’re literally waited on. The only thing they don’t do is hand feed you! There are multiple servers, food runners, you name it. Your glass is never empty because they are constantly patrolling the areas to refill everything before you notice, clean plates for every dish, and a brilliant set up for tastings. We shared about 8 dishes that were amazing. The one dish that surprised me was the salad. Immediately as we were seated, a man behind said “I’m ordering about 5 Uchi salads for myself!” Crazy I thought, how can someone crave that much salad? Umm, it is possible! Our group shared 2 orders of salad which literally consisted of leaves covered in sea salt and a dipping sauce. So simple, yet genius. It wasn’t enough to feed 4 and I would’ve ordered 4 more for myself. It was bangin’! There were multiple small tastings enough to tease you such as Uchiviche and Pork Jowl. What was great was the fact that every person who worked there knew exactly what was in each dish because by the time we received a new tasting, we completely forgot what it was! Great job on the little things, Uchi, it makes a difference. We decided to go out with a bang and end our meal with a dessert that will make you melt, Fried Milk. Yes, I’m lactose intolerant and despise the thought of milk, but hey when in Rome! There is no proper way to describe this except amazing. It was a fried ball with a vanilla custard-like filling covered in chocolate. I’m not big on desserts, but this I will make an exception for. We were there for about 3 hours eating and I feel like I blacked out from the ridiculously delicious goods I devoured. Mad props to Uchi, what an experience and I walked away with a full belly, too! If you’re in the Houston area, swing by Uchi located downtown. I promise it will be worth the time and money as it exceeded my expectations and more! Wheels up in 30!
